    Political and Economic Factors Influencing Strike Activity during the Recent Economic Crisis: A Study of the Spanish Case between 2002 and 2013

    The Great Recession and the upsurge of widespread social movements in various crisis-ridden countries have given new impetus to the debate on the relationship between economic breakdown and the occurrence of collective action. I revisit the issue by examining strike activity in Spain between 2002 and 2013. For a better understanding of the continuities and changes, I contrast two sets of literature on industrial conflict. The first deals with economic factors influencing strikes or, in other words, with the question of whether and how fluctuations in manpower supply and demand account for continuities and changes in strike activity. The second advocates for a look beyond the economy, towards the political exchange that takes place between unions and state actors and which, depending on its positive or negative nature, leads to shifts of the distributional struggle away from the marketplace towards the public arena or vice versa. The findings reveal that, rather than exclusive, the two perspectives prove to be mutually conducive and are most significant when they are combined. The political exchange model is helpful for understanding the rather stable or even declining strike frequency prior to the economic crisis but also the three nationwide general strikes in 2010 and 2012, which represented a rupture in the social consensus. If the general strikes are left aside, the economic variables come into play: an increased strike frequency during the economic crisis is in fact accompanied by a shift towards smaller strikes related to a single workplace, and to so-called “defensive” strikes. This indicates that an actual decrease in workers’ bargaining power was overcompensated by a growing number of circumstances in which the recourse to strike action became a means of last resort

    On the Usefulness of Combining Strike and Protest Research: Some Insights from the Spanish Case (2000-2016)

    During the past half century, the study of social contention has been characterized by a division between research on labor movements and studies on other social movements. This division also left its mark on the study of modes of action: while labor scholars mainly examined strikes, social movement scholars have increasingly come to focus on street protests. This article is a contribution to bridging the gap between the two research areas both on theoretical and empirical levels. On a theoretical level, I discuss the usefulness of combining economic and political models of contention from the two research areas. On an empirical level, I use official data provided by Spanish ministries to examine and relate the workers’ use of strikes and street protests between 2000 and 2016 in Spain. En el último medio siglo, los estudios del conflicto social se han caracterizado por una separación entre investigaciones sobre movimientos laborales y estudios sobre otros movimientos sociales. Esta división también dejó su marca en el estudio de los modos de acción: mientras que las sociólogas y los sociólogos del trabajo examinaban principalmente las huelgas, las y los especialistas en movimientos sociales se han centrado cada vez más en las protestas callejeras. Este artículo es una contribución para cerrar la brecha entre las dos áreas de investigación tanto a nivel teórico como empírico. A nivel teórico, se discute la utilidad de combinar modelos económicos y políticos del conflicto social de las dos áreas de investigación. A nivel empírico, se utilizan datos oficiales proporcionados por ministerios españoles para examinar y relacionar el uso de huelgas y manifestaciones callejeras por parte de los trabajadores entre 2000 y 2016 en España. El examen combinado de las huelgas y las protestas callejeras no sólo proporciona una imagen más completa, sino que también ayuda a discernir los contrastes y, por lo tanto, las particularidades de cada modo de acción

    Pressure dependence of the Boson peak in glassy As2S3 studied by Raman Scattering

    A detailed pressure-dependence study of the low-energy excitations of glassy As2S3 is reported over a wide pressure range, up to 10 GPa. The spectral features of Boson peak are analysed as a function of pressure. Pressure effects on the Boson peak are manifested as an appreciable shift of its frequency to higher values, a suppression of its intensity, as well as a noticeable change of its asymmetry leading to a more symmetric shape at high pressures. The pressure-induced Boson peak frequency shift agrees very well with the predictions of the soft potential model over the whole pressure range studied. As regards the pressure dependence of the Boson peak intensity, the situation is more complicated. It is proposed that in order to reach proper conclusions the corresponding dependence of the Debye density of states must also be considered. Employing a comparison of the low energy modes of the crystalline counterpart of As2S3 as well as the experimental data concerning the pressure dependencies of the Boson peak frequency and intensity, structural or glass-to-glass transition seems to occur at the pressure ~4 GPa related to a change of local structure. Finally, the pressure-induced shape changes of the Boson peak can be traced back to the very details of the excess (over the Debye contribution) vibrational density of states.Comment: To appear in J.     Studie über die Nutzung von Newsfeed-Reader-Apps als Grundlage für Verhaltensdesign

    Das Lesen von Newsfeeds wird immer populärer, obwohl digitale Medien zunehmend für Nutzer_innen verborgene Risiken, wie z.B. die Anwendung von verhaltensbeeinflussenden Designelementen, beinhalten. Um den Einfluss solcher Designelemente zu erforschen, widmet sich diese Studie, als Vorstudie für eine weitere Fallstudie mit einer Newsfeed-Reader-App, der Untersuchung des Leseverhaltens. Dabei wird den Fragen nachgegangen, wie sich das Leseverhalten von potenziellen Nutzer_innen einer Newsfeed-Reader-App gestaltet und welche Bedarfe Nutzer_innen haben. Zudem wurden die Teilnehmenden zur Untersuchung des Risikobewusstseins in Bezug auf digitale Medien zu ihrer Einschätzung der YouTube- und Facebook-App befragt. Die insgesamt 77 Teilnehmenden der Studie wurden an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum befragt. Zur Erhebung der Daten wurde ein Online-Fragebogen genutzt. Die Analyse der deskriptiven Daten erfolgte anhand von Abbildungen und Tabellen. Die Teilnehmenden bilden eine anspruchsvolle und bewusste Leserschaft, die zumeist mehrmals am Tag und oft zwischendurch liest und sich der Risiken der digitalen und sozialen Medien bewusst ist. Ein App-Design, welches darauf abzielt, Leser_innen dazu zu bewegen, häufiger zu lesen, z.B. mit nicht mehr als ein oder zwei Push-Nachrichten täglich, hat gute Chancen, die Lesehäufigkeit und dadurch auch die gesamte Lesezeit zu erhöhen. Der Einbau von sozialen Aspekten, wie z.B. der Vergleich der Leseleistung mit anderen Leser_innen sowie eine Diskussionsmöglichkeit oder Bewertung von Artikeln durch Mitleser_innen wird ebenfalls empfohlen. Möglichst vielseitige, aber transparente Filteroptionen, die Möglichkeit zur selbstbestimmten Auswahl an Nachrichteninhalten, Schnelllese- und Vorlesefunktionen bzw. eine Lesehilfe sind auch erwünscht. Ablenkende Elemente wie Gamification, Werbung, Boulevardjournalismus und Meinungs-Bubbles sollten vermieden werden. Reading newsfeeds gets more and more popular, although digital media contain an increasing number of hidden risks for users, such as the application of design elements that influence behaviour. In order to study the influence of such design elements, we investigate reading behaviour in the present study, which is a scoping study for a follow-up case study implementing a newsfeed reader app. Using a survey, we ask potential users of a newsfeed reader app about their reading habits and needs. Moreover, we ask participants to assess their risk perception of digital media with regard to the YouTube and Facebook apps. The overall 77 participants of the study were recruited at the Ruhr-University Bochum. We used an online survey to collect data. For the analysis of the descriptive data, we used figures and tables. The participants make up a demanding and conscious readership. Most of them read several times a day and often in between. They are conscious about the risks of digital and social media. An app design that aims to make readers reading more often has good chances to succeed in increasing reading frequency and thus also total reading time unless it contains more than one or two push notifications a day. We also recommend to build in social aspects, such as comparison of reading performance, and possibilities to discuss or rate articles. All-round but still transparent filtering options, a possibility to self-select news content, speed reading, text-to-speech, and reading aid functionalities are desirable. Distracting elements, such as gamification, ads, tabloid press and opinion bubbles should be avoided

    Pyrrolidine nucleoside bisphosphonates as antituberculosis agents targeting hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase

    Therapeutic treatment of tuberculosis (TB) is becoming increasingly problematic due to the emergence of drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mt). Thus, new targets for anti-TB drug discovery need to be identified to combat and eradicate this disease. One such target is hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HGPRT) which synthesises the 6-oxopurine nucleoside monophosphates essential for DNA/RNA production. [3R,4R]-4-Hypoxanthin-9-yl-3-( (S)-2-hydroxy-2-phosphonoethyl)oxy-1-N-(phosphonopropionyl)pyrrolidine and [3R,4R-4-guanin-9-yl-3-((S)-2-hydroxy-2-phosphonoethyl)oxy-1-N-(phosphonopropionyl)pyrrolidine (compound 6) are the most potent inhibitors of MtHGPRT yet discovered having K-i values of 60 nM. The crystal structure of the MtHGPRT.6 complex was obtained and compared with that of human HGPRT in complex with the same inhibitor. These structures provide explanations for the 60-fold difference in the inhibition constants between these two enzymes and a foundation for the design of next generation inhibitors. In addition, crystal structures of MtHGPRT in complex with two pyrrolidine nucleoside phosphosphonate inhibitors plus pyrophosphate provide insights into the final stage of the catalytic reaction. As the first step in ascertaining if such compounds have the potential to be developed as anti-TB therapeutics, the tetra-(ethyl L-phenylalanine) tetraamide prodrug of 6 was tested in cell based assays. This compound arrested the growth of virulent Mt not only in its replicating phase (IC50 of 14 mu M) but also in its latent phase (IC50 of 29 mu M). Furthermore, it arrested the growth of Mt in infected macrophages (MIC50 of 85 mu M) and has a low cytotoxicity in mammalian cells (CC50 of 132 +/- 20 mu M).     RNA splicing is a key mediator of tumour cell plasticity and a therapeutic vulnerability in colorectal cancer

    Tumour cell plasticity is a major barrier to the efficacy of targeted cancer therapies but the mechanisms that mediate it are poorly understood. Here, we identify dysregulated RNA splicing as a key driver of tumour cell dedifferentiation in colorectal cancer (CRC). We find that Apc-deficient CRC cells have dysregulated RNA splicing machinery and exhibit global rewiring of RNA splicing. We show that the splicing factor SRSF1 controls the plasticity of tumour cells by controlling Kras splicing and is required for CRC invasion in a mouse model of carcinogenesis. SRSF1 expression maintains stemness in human CRC organoids and correlates with cancer stem cell marker expression in human tumours. Crucially, partial genetic downregulation of Srsf1 does not detrimentally affect normal tissue homeostasis, demonstrating that tumour cell plasticity can be differentially targeted. Thus, our findings link dysregulation of the RNA splicing machinery and control of tumour cell plasticity

    The ASTRO-H X-ray Observatory

    The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly successful X-ray missions initiated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). ASTRO-H will investigate the physics of the high-energy universe via a suite of four instruments, covering a very wide energy range, from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. These instruments include a high-resolution, high-throughput spectrometer sensitive over 0.3-2 keV with high spectral resolution of Delta E < 7 eV, enabled by a micro-calorimeter array located in the focal plane of thin-foil X-ray optics; hard X-ray imaging spectrometers covering 5-80 keV, located in the focal plane of multilayer-coated, focusing hard X-ray mirrors; a wide-field imaging spectrometer sensitive over 0.4-12 keV, with an X-ray CCD camera in the focal plane of a soft X-ray telescope; and a non-focusing Compton-camera type soft gamma-ray detector, sensitive in the 40-600 keV band.     Sensing iron availability via the fragile [4Fe-4S] cluster of the bacterial transcriptional repressor RirA

    Rhizobial iron regulator A (RirA) is a global regulator of iron homeostasis in many nitrogen-fixing Rhizobia and related species of α-proteobacteria. It belongs to the widespread Rrf2 super-family of transcriptional regulators and features three conserved Cys residues that characterise the binding of an iron–sulfur cluster in other Rrf2 family regulators. Here we report biophysical studies demonstrating that RirA contains a [4Fe–4S] cluster, and that this form of the protein binds RirA-regulated DNA, consistent with its function as a repressor of expression of many genes involved in iron uptake. Under low iron conditions, [4Fe–4S] RirA undergoes a cluster conversion reaction resulting in a [2Fe–2S] form, which exhibits much lower affinity for DNA. Under prolonged low iron conditions, the [2Fe–2S] cluster degrades to apo-RirA, which does not bind DNA and can no longer function as a repressor of the cell's iron-uptake machinery. [4Fe–4S] RirA was also found to be sensitive to O2, suggesting that both iron and O2 are important signals for iron metabolism. Consistent with this, in vivo data showed that expression of RirA-regulated genes is also affected by O2. These data lead us to propose a novel regulatory model for iron homeostasis, in which RirA senses iron via the incorporation of a fragile iron–sulfur cluster that is sensitive to iron and O2 concentrations
